Helping a Shih Tzu Feel Comfortable with Time Apart

Puppy Preparation
Shih Tzu — AI-generated illustrative breed imagery, not puppy inventory

A Shih Tzu’s preparation for time apart should fit the individual dog and your household. Being a companion breed does not tell you exactly how a puppy will respond when you leave. A useful starting point is to understand its experience, plan support and notice whether it feels comfortable.

Plan care before you need to leave

Write down the periods when your household will be away, who can help and what happens if work or travel plans change. Discuss the puppy’s existing routine with its caregiver before collection. Our before-booking checklist can help you keep practical questions together.

Choose a named backup carer and explain the puppy’s routine in advance. Record contact details and agree how changes will be communicated. A plan that depends on everybody assuming somebody else is available is difficult to put into practice.

Build comfortable experiences gradually

Dogs Trust recommends introducing time apart gradually and watching the dog’s response. Begin preparation before you need a long absence. A comfortable resting space and manageable, positive experiences can form part of that learning. If the dog becomes worried, reduce the difficulty rather than increasing the time to meet a calendar target. The pace should follow the individual dog.

Keep a simple observation note: what you tried, what the dog did and what would make the next attempt easier. This is not a test to pass. The purpose is to give your trainer or veterinary team a clear description, instead of relying on a general impression that the puppy was fine.

Notice behaviour without assuming a diagnosis

The RSPCA explains that some signs of separation-related distress are not apparent while the owner is present. Pacing, vocalising or damage can be reasons to investigate, but they do not by themselves establish the cause. A safely positioned camera recording may help you see what happens and provide information for a professional. Do not deliberately extend an upsetting absence to obtain a recording.

Note the setting and anything that changed: a different room, unfamiliar sounds or an altered household routine. Keep observations factual. Write what happened rather than labelling the dog stubborn or assuming it acted out of spite.

Respond with support rather than punishment

The RSPCA advises against shouting at or punishing a dog for behaviour that happened while you were away. Reward-based training should progress at a pace the dog can manage. Leaving a dog distressed to force it to get used to being alone is not the aim. Arrange suitable company when needed while you seek help.

Know when to involve your veterinarian

Dogs Trust recommends a veterinary check when separation anxiety is suspected because health problems can contribute or show overlapping signs. A qualified behaviour professional can help develop an individual plan. A crate alone is not a treatment for separation anxiety and can be unsafe for a panicking dog. Do not assume a new toy, another puppy or a fixed training deadline will resolve the problem.

Take your routine, observations and any safe recording to the appointment. Ask what help is appropriate, what you should do meanwhile and how progress will be reviewed. If you are worried about your dog’s health or safety, contact your veterinarian promptly.
