A Havanese is a small companion dog whose daily care involves more than choosing a manageable size. The breed is generally sociable, and its coat needs a regular care routine. Before making an enquiry, consider how company, grooming and patient training will fit into your household.
A companion needs your time
The American Kennel Club describes the Havanese as a lively, sociable companion. Think about who will be present through the day and how work, school and travel affect that arrangement. A small dog should still have opportunities for shared activity and quiet rest. Discuss the individual puppy’s existing routine rather than assuming all Havanese have the same personality.
Grooming is an ongoing commitment
The Havanese Club of America emphasises regular coat care, including for dogs kept in a short trim. Ask a groomer to demonstrate brushing and combing for the individual coat, and agree a realistic appointment schedule. Introduce handling gradually through positive experiences. Do not wait for a tangled coat before arranging help.
Before choosing a long coat, decide who will maintain it between appointments. Include grooming tools, appointments and time in your household plan. A shorter style can change the routine, but does not remove the need for care.
Keep learning gentle and varied
The breed club recommends positive training and short, varied sessions. Practise one manageable skill at a time and reward the behaviour you want. Agree consistent cues across the household. Ask a qualified trainer for individual guidance if you are unsure how to introduce a new routine.
Choose play and outings for the dog’s age and individual needs; a puppy does not need to follow an adult dog’s activity plan. Plan who will supervise interactions with children and other animals. Give the dog a place to rest without being followed or picked up.
Questions before a puppy enquiry
- What is the puppy’s age, daily routine and observed behaviour?
- Can I see current photographs of that individual puppy?
- Which veterinary records and relevant parent information are available for independent review?
- What grooming routine has the puppy experienced?
- What does the written quotation include, and which terms apply?
