Watching a Shih Tzu puppy grow is easier when you have a consistent record and someone qualified to help interpret it. A single weight or photograph cannot show the whole picture. This guide explains how to prepare for a growth discussion with your veterinarian, without setting a target size for every puppy.
Start with reliable handover information
Ask for the puppy’s date of birth, previous dated weights and available veterinary records. If an age or measurement is estimated, label it that way. Create one shared record for the household. Include the puppy’s name, appointment details and the person responsible for updating it. This avoids several separate notes with different units or missing dates.
Understand what a growth chart can show
WALTHAM’s puppy growth charts compare a puppy’s weight over time with reference curves for dogs of a similar expected adult size and sex. Its validated curves begin at 12 weeks. Ask your vet to choose an appropriate chart and explain its limits, especially if the puppy’s age or expected adult size is uncertain. A lower curve is not automatically a problem, and a higher one is not a goal. Changes in the pattern need context rather than a diagnosis from a website.
Keep measurements consistent
WALTHAM recommends using the same scales when possible and accounting for items such as a carrier or clothing. Ask the veterinary clinic how to weigh a small puppy safely and how often to record a measurement. Do not balance an unsettled puppy on equipment that cannot safely support it. Let the clinic help when weighing at home is difficult.

Review feeding alongside growth
The Royal Kennel Club recommends regular weighing and veterinary guidance when owners are unsure about growth. Food quantities depend on the individual puppy, including age, activity and health. Check whether a package’s feeding guide refers to current weight or expected adult weight. Bring the label and current routine to the appointment rather than adjusting food to match another puppy’s photograph.
